Decluttering SUCKS
Getting your home ready for sale can be a pain in the you know what. One of the first steps in getting your home ready to sell is to declutter.
Decluttering: Dun, dun DUN. We all have a bunch of shit laying around that we no longer use or need. Am I right, or am I right? Now, I get this can be super overwhelming. Especially for someone who has lived in their home for 20+ years. So, let me break it down for you and make it as stress free as possible. Disclaimer... you are going to have to release your emotional attachment to many items...
~ Break your work down into rooms.
~ Set aside an hour a day for each room.
~ Be willing to LET IT GO
The number one mistake I see people doing is they want to declutter and start working on the entire home instead of breaking it down, room by room. This is the best way to become completely overwhelmed and give up on the entire project.
First, choose the room you are going to be working on. Gather all of the trash and remove immediately. Food wrappers, water bottles, boxes, old food, cans etc. get rid of it all.
Second, go through the room (bedroom for this example) and start on one wall. Go through every item on that wall (dresser, nightstand, closet etc.). Remove any items that you no longer use or need. Get rid of clothing that are torn, do not fit, or you do not wear any longer. Create two-three piles. One for donating, one for trash and one to sell. Really take this time to think about, do I actually need this? You most likely will find this part to be harder, in letting go of the emotional attachment you have to items. But, also keep in mind it is time for a new beginning and that means some items have to go.
Third, now that you have removed all items you no longer need/want take the opportunity to wipe down all your surfaces. Clean your baseboards, wipe down furniture and cabinets, wash the windows etc. This will give the whole room a fresh new vibe.
Fourth, Organize. Put like items together, make sure all items have a place, purchase bins if needed etc. Make sure to discard of all expired products. If you have multiples of products try condensing things. Utilize wall space and cabinet space. Hanging wire racks in closets, or shelving units can help give a space definition.
I will be doing a 7 day organization challenge in the next couple of weeks so definitely make sure to keep an eye out for that!
My best piece of advice is to PLAN AHEAD. Get a schedule together, and get your household on board. This is a great opportunity to teach kiddos (if you have any) about donating their items to a good cause.
I would also love to share with you that I have a degree in interior design and I am certified in professional staging. With that being said I offer all of my clients a free staging consultation where I personally go through your home and let you know what I think should be done in order to get top dollar when you are ready to sell. Many clients have been extremely pleased with this free service as they can get their home prepared for sale, months in advance.
